Every year, the United Nations marks World Tourism Day on September 27 and while there have been numerous protests against over-tourism recently, UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s message for this year’s anniversary is how much tourism brings people together.
“As we celebrate tourism, let us travel responsibly, build bridges, and promote mutual respect among cultures and nations,” said Guterres who added that there is a profound connection between tourism and peace.
“Tourism broadens horizons. Every traveller can be an ambassador, engaging respectfully with local populations, recognizing our diversity and shared humanity, and the values that unite us all.”
As travel returns to pre-pandemic levels, here are the world’s most visited countries, according to the UN’s World Tourism Barometer, with statistics for 2023, and the attractions that make them famous:

1. France (100 million visitors)
As the world’s premier tourist destination, France continues to enchant visitors with its romantic capital, Paris, home to the iconic Eiffel Tower and Louvre Museum. It definitely got a boost in numbers with this year’s Olympics so expect it to remain on the top of the list. The picturesque vineyards of Bordeaux, the lavender fields of Provence and the glamorous French Riviera are just a few of the attractions that draw millions to France every year.
2. Spain (85.2 million visitors)
Spain offers a diverse palette of experiences, from the sun-soaked beaches of Costa del Sol to the historic streets of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. Don’t miss the architectural wonders of Antoni Gaudí, including the Sagrada Familia, or the vibrant festivities like La Tomatina. Spain’s cultural heritage, combined with its culinary delights, makes it a hot favourite among travellers, perhaps to the dismay of some locals who have staged overtourism protests in the country.

The United States boasts an array of natural and man-made wonders, ranging from the skyscrapers of New York City to the natural grandeur of the Grand Canyon. Theme parks like Walt Disney World and cultural landmarks like the Smithsonian Museums offer something for every traveller. The melting pot of cultures is evident in the country’s diverse regional food, music and art scenes.

Italy is a country of immense cultural wealth, with its ancient Roman ruins like the Colosseum, the art-filled cities of Florence and Venice, and the rolling hills of Tuscany making it a magnet for tourists. Italian cuisine and fashion are world-renowned, making Italy a top destination for those seeking a taste of la dolce vita.

Straddling two continents, Turkey is a fascinating blend of East and West. Istanbul’s historic Sultanahmet district, the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus are must-visit sites. Turkish cuisine, with its rich flavors and traditional coffee, adds to the allure of this vibrant country.
6. Mexico (42.2 million visitors)
Mexico’s rich history is on full display at the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and the bustling streets of Mexico City.
